Meet Margaret and Doug Beck, the founders of Levanta Ministries, the parent organization for the brand LUCIA. Their journey of passion and compassion began in the heart of the Dominican Republic in 2012, and it has since grown into a mission to uplift lives and empower their community on the north coast of the Dominican Republic.
Margaret and Doug, who were happily living in Austin, embarked on a life-changing adventure when they felt like God was calling them to move to the Dominican Republic in 2012. Inspired by their love for the culture and its people, they soon recognized the pressing needs within their community. They saw untapped potential and dreams that could flourish with the right opportunities.
In 2019, Margaret and Doug officially established Levanta Ministries, a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that focuses on 3 main areas: Education, Community Assistance and Spiritual needs. The word "Levanta" means "rise up" in Spanish, perfectly communicating their mission to help individuals rise above adversity and create a brighter future for themselves and their families. In addition, Levanta created an Artisan Program in an effort to provide employment in the community.
The Artisan Program has been an evolving project over the years, and it all traces back to the creation of a purse. Back in 2015, well before Levanta Ministries came into existence, Lucia made a purse as a gift for one of Margaret's friends, and that is the precise moment that Margaret recognized Lucia's remarkable talent. Out of sheer excitement Margaret said, "Lucia, if you'll make these, I'll sell them." This pivotal moment took place in 2015, and five years later, their shared dream began to take shape. After three years in the works, this vision led to the birth of the brand LUCIA. What sets LUCIA apart is the commitment to paying artisans a fair wage for their beautiful work, ensuring that their skills and creativity are valued.
Every dollar of revenue generated from LUCIA sales goes directly back to Levanta Ministries, funding their ongoing efforts to improve the lives of Dominican families through their Christ-centered programs.
